Tetris: Benefits of Playing Alone and with Friends

A look at why Tetris is fun in both single player and multiplayer settings.

In Tetris, there are generally two primary game modes to choose from: single player and multiplayer. The most common choice is arguably single player, as this is the way many fans first discover their love of Tetris. As the years have passed, new variants of Tetris have emerged in an effort to help shake things up.

Many of these variants are based around multiplayer, which adds in a nuance of competition to the standard act of clearing lines in Tetris. If you’re wondering which version is best for you, we’ll quickly go over how Tetris can be fun in both single player and multiplayer modes.

Single Player Mode

With single player Tetris, your primary goal is to clear as many lines as you can in order to reach the highest score possible. In addition, other factors can be put into play in order to spice things up, such as a time limit, modifiers, or a gradual speed increase in relation to how fast the Tetriminos fall.

Single player is the best option for Tetris beginners because it gives you the breathing room necessary to become comfortable with the game prior to testing your skills against other players. The fact that you don’t have to worry about competing against someone else helps make single player a more relaxing experience as a whole.

One of the main reasons why we find single player relaxing is that you’re in complete control of how you play Tetris. We often find ourselves playing versions of Endless mode in Tetris where the primary goal is to avoid reaching the top of the Matrix. There are versions of Endless mode without speed increases, time limits, or set goals.

Because of this, all you have to worry about is where you choose to place your Tetriminos. With these factors in mind, single player is best for gamers who prefer a straight game of Tetris, or those looking to improve their Tetris skills in a more controlled environment.

Multiplayer Mode

If you’re a seasoned Tetris player, or comfortable with the game and seeking a bit of a challenge, multiplayer is definitely the way to go.

Multiplayer matches are often chaotic and fast-paced. As such, multiplayer is the perfect option for Tetris players looking to put their skills to the test. Furthermore, multiplayer is perfect for those who want to try something new. With millions of Tetris players all over the world, you’re guaranteed to find an opponent worthy enough to challenge your Tetris skills.

While single player may be the way many gamers discovered Tetris, multiplayer has gone on to become a signature staple in the repertoire of Tetris lovers all over the world. For example, there are a wide variety of games that offer multiplayer Tetris that you can play right now including Puyo Puyo Tetris (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4), Tetris Blitz (Android, iOS), and Tetris Battle Drop (iPad and Facebook), among others.

If you’re looking to spend an afternoon bonding with your buddies, there are Tetris games with local co-op multiplayer. Here, you can sit side-by-side and catch up on how your friends are doing all while sharing in your common Tetris bond. It can be challenging to pick out the right couch co-op game to play with your friends, but when it comes to Tetris, it’s always a safe bet.

Tetris is infamous for being a game that’s easy to pick up and play. This means that even if your friends have never played Tetris, they’ll have no trouble jumping in and giving it a try! Nowadays, most Tetris releases include options for both single player and multiplayer, so choosing which one you play really boils down to personal preference.

If you’re new to the game, feel free to stick to single player and hone your skills. If you’re looking to compete against people, check out multiplayer and see how you rank against other Tetris players. Or, if you’re like us, you can go back and forth and play a bit of both!
