Organize Your Dishwasher Using Tetris

Organize Your Dishwasher Using Tetris

Doing the dishes can be a blast with a little help from your favorite puzzle game!

Household chores can be a pain, especially ones like doing laundry or the dishes. However, turning these tasks into a game can help pass the time. Fortunately, we can use our Tetris skills to improve everyday life, whether it’s loading up the car or packing for a vacation. One of the most common ways we can apply our Tetris skills is loading and unloading the dishwasher.

Even if you don’t have a dishwasher in your home, neatly putting away your clean dishes in either a drying rack or the cupboard has a similar feel to dishwasher Tetris. If you’re thinking about organizing your dishwasher, the first step is to take a look at your dishes and figure out your Tetris strategy.

Visualize each item, including cups, dishes, utensils, and bowls (among others) as their own individual Tetrimino. Next, look at your Tetris Matrix, in this case the dishwasher. Most dishwashers are designed to help you separate your dishes in order to make cleaning easier. At the top, you’ll often have a rack for cups and small items, like children’s plates and bowls.

At the bottom, you have room for large dinner plates and a compartment for utensils. While you can follow this layout during the process of loading and unloading your dishwasher, you can also help make it more efficient. For example, if you have more bowls to wash on that particular day, you can evenly space them out using the top compartment. See? Not just for cups!

There’s no set rule as to how or where your dishes should be placed within a dishwasher. In the end, just like Tetris, it’s up to you to figure out the method you’re most comfortable with. Taking it a step further, if you’re looking to speed up the process of putting your dishes away in the cupboard, you can use your Tetris skills to help you make the most out of your cupboard space.

Plates are the easiest Tetrimino because they stack neatly on top of one another. The same can be said for bowls, although you’ll often have to create various different stacks and put each stack next to one another.

The hardest Tetriminos to put away are cups, mugs, and utensils.

Some cups, like those made of plastic, are stackable. We find that stacking plastic cups in a similar manner as bowls, then putting them away, makes it easier to save space. Meanwhile for mugs, you want to pay attention to the position of the handle. If you put your mugs in haphazardly, you’ll find their handles will create an imperfect Tetris stack.

Instead, if you’re creating two rows of mugs, try to have their handles facing either inside or out depending upon your cupboard design. Try to avoid having the handles facing forwards or backwards, as you’ll lose quite a bit of cupboard space. Finally, when it comes to utensils, there are unique Tetris Matrixes you can purchase that fit inside of your drawer.

These come with spots designed to hold each Tetrimino, including spoons, forks, and knives. It’s funny how Tetris has become so universal, even to the point where dishwashers and drawer organizers are designed with Tetris in mind! So, the next time someone asks you to load up the dishwasher, you’ll have a fun game to play.

Who knows, maybe you can challenge yourself and try to beat your fastest time? The quicker you load up your dishwasher, the sooner you can get back to playing a round or two of Tetris online!
